What I am for you terrifies me

St. Augustine has me reflecting hard this week

A week ago today, when Pope Leo XIV was elected pope, he — being the Augustinian he is — cited his spiritual father St. Augustine by saying this: “For You I am a bishop, with You I am a Christian.”

Archbishop Michael Miller, in what would be his final public homily to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, also re-iterated this quote but also expanded it by including this, also from Augustine: “What I am for you terrifies me, but what I am with you consoles me.”

It was this line that has given me pause over the last few days, probably because I’ve been feeling the weight of transition, feeling a little burnt out, and like I’ve been letting a lot of people down.

But in the Lord, there is hope. I’ve been trying to remind myself of that again and again recently. And I think it’s no accident that this quote has been trying to be a constant presence in my mind.

An unfiltered and raw afternoon reflection on this quote for you today, and trying something a little different on this my little substack!

As a total aside, I wanted to give thanks and also welcome anyone who is new here, and may have stumbled across my corner of the internet through my latest post. So thank you for subscribing!

This is a not-so-regular newsletter where I share many of the things that spark interest and curiosity within me, which I’ve come to describe as “divine appointments” with the Lord. I believe that everything and everyone can be an opportunity to encounter Christ, if only we have the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and the heart open to receive.

I don’t catch all of them, because sometimes I do miss where the Lord is inviting me. But in the times where I do meet Him for the appointment He’s set for me, I hope that these reflections — and maybe now, more in video! — prove to be a little helpful and insightful for you, too.

I am humbled by your reads, your comments, and your shared reflections. Thank you.

In Christ,
Rachel
